RELEASED: Living From Our True Identity, Part 1
Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed... When they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!” Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come." - Mark 1:35-38
Welcome to this series on discovering our true identity in Christ. Few truths are more life-changing than knowing who you are and whose you are. When our identity is secure, we are no longer controlled by the opinions of others, driven by performance, or shaken by failure. Instead, we can live from a place of freedom and rest in the Father's love.
As we begin this journey, we will discover that our true identity is not something that can be lost. If our identity is rooted in the approval of people or the success of our ministry, we remain vulnerable because both are unstable and constantly changing. Our identity in Christ rests on something far more secure.
Your truest identity is found in whose you are. In Christ, you are a beloved son or daughter of God, chosen by the Father and secure in his love. It is a gift of grace rooted in God's unchanging love.
We see this reality in the life of Jesus.
In Mark 1, Jesus had just experienced extraordinary ministry success. Crowds were gathering, people were being healed, and his popularity was growing. Yet early the next morning, Jesus withdrew in solitude to pray. When the disciples found him, they urged him to return because "everyone is looking for you."
Instead, Jesus chose to move on to other villages, following his Father's direction rather than the expectations of the crowd. Neither popularity nor ministry success defined him. His identity was anchored in the Father's love.
Before Jesus performed a miracle or preached a sermon, the Father declared, "You are my beloved Son." His identity was established before his ministry began. Because he received his "ok-ness" from the Father's love, he was free from the need to please people or prove himself through results.
The same challenge confronts us today: Where do we get our "ok-ness" from?
When we look to people for validation, fear of man can shape our lives. We become preoccupied with others' opinions and struggle to live authentically. When we look to success for significance, we often fall into striving, comparison, pride, or shame. I know these traps all too well!
Neither people nor performance can sustain the weight of our identity.
Our fundamental identity is that of beloved sons and daughters of God. Chosen, adopted, and united with Christ, we are secure in the Father's love. Like Jesus, we can be free from the need to please people or prove ourselves through success. We can simply follow the Father's leading, trusting him with the outcome.
When we know who we are and whose we are, we can walk in the freedom of God's beloved children.
CLOSING PRAYER
Father, thank you that my identity is secure in your love. Forgive me for looking to people and performance to give me what only you can provide. Teach me to live as your beloved child. Free me from the fear of man and from the pressure to prove myself through success. Help me rest in what you say about me and follow you with humble confidence, regardless of the opinions of others or the results I see. May my life be anchored in your love alone. Amen.
