A Rejoicing Spirit

“And Mary said:
‘My soul glorifies the Lord
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has been mindful
of the humble state of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed,
for the Mighty One has done great things for me—
    holy is his name.
His mercy extends to those who fear him,
    from generation to generation.
He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;
he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.
He has brought down rulers from their thrones
but has lifted up the humble.
He has filled the hungry with good things
but has sent the rich away empty.
He has helped his servant Israel,
    remembering to be merciful
to Abraham and his descendants forever,
just as he promised our ancestors.’”
–Luke 1:46–55

Visio Divina

This art piece was inspired by the Magnificat (our scripture passage). Dig deeper into this scripture through a few minutes of visio divina, a reflective prayer practice that uses focusing on an image as a catalyst for prayer:

  • First, spend a minute or two looking at the whole image, the shapes, the colors. What stands out to you?

  • Meditate on the part of the picture that’s drawn your attention. What do you think God’s saying to you? Do you sense an invitation?

  • If this picture represented your song of joy, what might that be about?

  • What is your response to Jesus?

Additional Reflection:

  • Pray for those you know who are hungry (spiritually, emotionally, socially, or physically). What would “good things” look like to them?

  • Where would you like to see God bring justice, or Satan’s principalities and powers be extinguished?

  • What do you see God already doing in the world that causes your spirit to rejoice?
